Even though most schools have seen a steady increase in the number of multilingual students in the classroom, more than 60% of teachers indicate they have not had sufficient professional development opportunities on the topic of multilingual learners. Darlyne de Haan, EdD, is an instructional specialist for the New Jersey Department of Education, where she provided professional development to over 30 school districts labeled as either in need of improvement or a failing school.

Dr. Karen Johannesen Brock has been an educator and educational presenter for more than three decades. She has assisted more than 100 schools (K–12) and districts with implementing school improvement plans. Her work with schools and districts focuses on instructional coaching and design as well as professional learning plans, school-improvement plans, English learners and multilingual students, and literacy.

Cathy Padilla has served as an elementary education teacher, assistant principal, and principal at the intermediate and elementary levels. She specializes in developing and supporting leaders in professional learning communities, family engagement, categorical programs, migrant education, and English language development.

Lisa Tartaglia is a high school assistant principal in Loudoun County Public Schools in Virginia. She has been an educator since 1994 and has experience as an elementary classroom teacher, reading specialist, and high school literacy coach.
